Why is this online counter fraud, bribery and corruption in the NHS course significant?
The NHS Counter Fraud Authority (NHSCFA) is a new organisation tasked to lead the fight against fraud, bribery and corruption in the NHS.
According to our NHSCFA estimates, fraud costs the NHS £1.27 billion a year. That’s enough money to pay for over 40,000 staff nurses or to purchase over 5,000 frontline ambulances. It is taxpayers’ money that is taken away from patient care and falls into the hands of criminals.
What is fraud?
Fraud is when trickery is used to gain a dishonest advantage, which is often financial, over another person.
There are many words used to describe fraud: Scam, con, swindle, extortion, sham, double-cross, hoax, cheat, ploy, ruse, hoodwink, a confidence trick. These are just a few words you might hear about the fraud. Fraud can be committed against individuals or businesses.
Cybercrime is any criminal act dealing with computers and networks (called hacking). Additionally, cybercrime also includes traditional crimes conducted through the Internet.
What is corruption?
Corruption is a form of dishonest or unethical conduct by a person entrusted with a position of authority, often to acquire personal benefit.
What is bribery?
Bribery is the act of giving money, goods or other forms of payment to a recipient in exchange for an alteration of their behaviour that the recipient would otherwise not alter.
